Medical Emergency Resources for Expats in Cancún
Complete guide to emergency numbers, hospitals, English-speaking doctors, and medical resources in Cancún, Quintana Roo.
Before an Emergency
In Mexico, emergency response works differently than many expat home countries. The national emergency number is 911 (same as US), but response times in Cancún vary significantly between zones — Hotel Zone typically sees faster response (5-15 minutes) while outer residential areas can take 30-45 minutes.
For most medical emergencies, driving directly to a hospital is faster than waiting for an ambulance, especially outside the Hotel Zone. Mexican ERs require payment upfront or insurance verification before treatment, so carry your insurance card and a credit card with available credit. Many expats keep 10,000-15,000 MXN cash specifically for medical emergencies.
Private hospitals generally provide better English-language service and shorter wait times than public facilities. The closest major trauma center is in Mérida (4.5 hours drive), so serious emergencies requiring specialized surgery or ICU care may need medical evacuation.

Hospitals & Clinics

Hospital Galenia - Av. Tulum 260, downtown Cancún. Full-service private hospital with English-speaking staff, 24/7 emergency room, accepts most international insurance. Handles trauma, surgery, and ICU cases. Generally considered the best private option in Cancún.
Hospital Americano - Calle Viento 15, Supermanzana 4. Private hospital with good English support, 24/7 ER, strong in general medicine and surgery. More affordable than Galenia while maintaining quality care.
Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad - Carretera Mérida-Puerto Juárez KM 7. Public hospital, more limited English but highest-level trauma care available in Cancún. Free/low cost but longer wait times.
Major City Hospitals for Serious Emergencies

Hospital Faro del Mayab (Mérida) - 4.5 hours drive. Private facility with strong English-speaking medical staff, comprehensive specialty services.
English-Speaking Doctors
Cancún has numerous English-speaking doctors due to its expat and tourism population. The Cancún English Library maintains a current referral list of English-speaking doctors across specialties — contact them through Facebook or visit in person at Plaza Las Américas.
American Chamber of Commerce Cancún also maintains doctor referrals for members and can provide recommendations for non-members. Many Hotel Zone area doctors speak English due to medical tourism.
Kukulkan Medical Care and The House Call Doctor Cancún specifically market to English speakers and make house calls. Vacation Doctor on Av. Bonampak also focuses on English-speaking patients.
Doctor availability changes frequently, so verify current information rather than relying on old recommendations. Most private hospitals can arrange English-speaking specialists when needed.
Medical Translation
Cancún English Library coordinates volunteer translators for medical appointments — call ahead to request assistance. American Legion Post 24 Cancún also helps members with medical translation.
Professional medical translation services are available through Traducciones Médicas Cancún (verify contact locally) for around 800-1,200 MXN per appointment.
Download Google Translate offline Spanish pack before you need it. The camera translation feature works well for forms and signs. Practice key phrases: "Tengo dolor" (I have pain), "No hablo español" (I don't speak Spanish), "¿Habla inglés?" (Do you speak English?).
Many Cancún medical staff speak basic English, but having translation backup prevents dangerous misunderstandings about symptoms, medications, or allergies.
In-Home Care
Post-hospital nursing care is readily available in Cancún. Local pharmacies (Farmacia Similares, Farmacia del Ahorro) maintain lists of registered nurses available for home visits. Expect to pay 400-800 MXN per visit depending on services required.
Enfermería Domiciliaria Cancún provides professional in-home nursing (verify contact information locally). Services include wound care, medication administration, physical therapy support, and post-surgical care.
Many expat community groups maintain informal networks of caregivers and can provide recommendations based on recent experiences.
Air Evacuation
Medical evacuation insurance is crucial for serious emergencies. SkyMed and MedjetAssist are popular among expats — both provide air ambulance coverage from Mexico to US/Canadian hospitals.
Cancún International Airport handles medical evacuation flights with dedicated medical aviation services. Flight time to Houston or Miami is approximately 2-3 hours.
Most travel insurance policies do NOT cover medical evacuation, which can cost $50,000+ from Mexico. Verify your coverage includes evacuation to your home country, not just to the nearest adequate facility (which might be Mexico City).
Prevention
• Register with your embassy: US citizens use STEP program, Canadians use ROCA. Embassies can assist with medical emergencies and evacuation.
• Carry a medical information card with blood type, allergies, medications, emergency contacts, and insurance information in both English and Spanish.
• Save this guide offline — screenshot key phone numbers and hospital addresses when you have internet access.
• Keep emergency cash — 10,000-15,000 MXN for immediate medical expenses while insurance processes.
• Know your insurance coverage — call the number on your card to verify Mexico coverage and claim procedures before you need care.
