Internet Providers

Lake Chapala has several internet provider options, but availability varies significantly by neighborhood. Ajijic and central Chapala have the best coverage, while outlying areas may have limited choices.

Telmex is the most widely available provider throughout the Lake Chapala area. Basic plans start around $400-500 MXN monthly for 10-20 Mbps. Their fiber service (where available) offers 50-100 Mbps for $600-800 MXN monthly. Installation typically takes 1-2 weeks, but can stretch to 3-4 weeks during peak seasons when many expats arrive.

Totalplay has strong coverage in Ajijic and parts of Chapala Centro, offering some of the fastest residential speeds in the area. Plans range from $600-1200 MXN monthly for 50-200 Mbps. Fiber is available in select neighborhoods including central Ajijic and newer developments. Installation wait times are typically 1-2 weeks.

Izzi coverage is spotty around Lake Chapala. Available in some parts of Chapala Centro and select residential areas, with plans starting around $500 MXN monthly for basic service. Not recommended as a first choice due to limited coverage.

Starlink is becoming increasingly popular among remote workers, especially in areas with poor traditional internet coverage. The equipment costs around $12,000 MXN upfront, with monthly service around $1,100 MXN. Setup is immediate once equipment arrives.

Note: Many neighborhoods, particularly in the hills above the lake and newer developments, may only have one or two provider options. Always verify availability at your specific address before signing a lease.

Expected Speeds

Be realistic about internet speeds in Lake Chapala — actual speeds often fall short of advertised rates, especially during peak hours (7-10 PM).

Typical real-world speeds:

  • Telmex basic: 8-15 Mbps download, 1-3 Mbps upload
  • Telmex fiber: 30-80 Mbps download, 5-15 Mbps upload
  • Totalplay: 40-150 Mbps download, 10-30 Mbps upload
  • Starlink: 50-200 Mbps download, 10-40 Mbps upload (weather dependent)

Fiber availability is limited but growing. Central Ajijic, Chapala Centro, and some newer developments like Chula Vista Norte have fiber options. Rural areas and hillside properties often rely on DSL or fixed wireless.

Reliability concerns: Power outages affect internet service, and storms can disrupt connections for hours. Telmex infrastructure is aging in some areas, leading to periodic outages. Starlink performs well but can be affected by heavy rain or snow (rare but possible at this elevation).

For serious remote work requiring consistent 25+ Mbps upload speeds for video calls, consider Totalplay fiber or Starlink, and always have a backup plan.

Phone & SIM Cards

Getting mobile service in Lake Chapala is straightforward, with good coverage throughout the area.

Telcel has the strongest coverage around Lake Chapala, including good signal in the hills and rural areas. Prepaid plans start at $100 MXN for basic service. Popular options include:

  • $200 MXN monthly: 3GB data + unlimited WhatsApp
  • $300 MXN monthly: 6GB data + unlimited social media
  • $500 MXN monthly: 12GB data + unlimited calling

AT&T (Unefon) offers competitive rates but coverage can be spotty in hills above the lake. Plans are typically 10-20% cheaper than Telcel:

  • $150 MXN monthly: 2GB data + unlimited WhatsApp
  • $250 MXN monthly: 5GB data + unlimited social media

Buy SIM cards at OXXO convenience stores (multiple locations in Chapala and Ajijic), Telcel stores (Chapala Centro and Ajijic), or Walmart in Chapala. Bring your passport for registration.

eSIM options are available through both carriers for compatible phones, though physical SIM cards are more reliable for initial setup.

WhatsApp is essential for daily life — most businesses, services, and social groups communicate primarily through WhatsApp. Even basic plans include unlimited WhatsApp usage.

Coworking Spaces

Lake Chapala has several coworking options, from dedicated spaces to community centers with work-friendly environments.

INSPIRE CO-LAB (Independencia 133, Chapala) is a dedicated coworking space with day passes around $150 MXN, weekly rates $800 MXN, and monthly memberships $2,500 MXN. Features include high-speed WiFi, AC, meeting rooms, and printing services. Popular with digital nomads and local entrepreneurs.

The Lake Chapala Society (16 de Septiembre 16, Ajijic) offers a work-friendly environment for members. Annual membership is around $1,000 MXN, with library and meeting spaces available. WiFi is reliable but speeds are moderate. Strong community of expat professionals.

GodCode (C. Madero 1C, Ixtlahuacan) is a smaller tech-focused coworking space. Monthly rates around $2,000 MXN with flexible day passes available. Caters to software developers and tech professionals.

For casual work sessions, several cafes welcome laptop users during non-peak hours. Coffee Hour and Al Kafé in Chapala Centro both offer reliable WiFi and are popular with remote workers, especially in the mornings.

Backup Plans

Internet outages are common, so having multiple backup options is essential for maintaining a remote work schedule.

Mobile hotspot should be your first backup. Telcel has the most reliable data coverage around Lake Chapala, including in areas where other carriers struggle. A dedicated data SIM with 20GB monthly costs around $400 MXN. Keep this as a separate line from your main phone.

Reliable WiFi cafes for emergency work sessions:

  • Coffee Hour (Chapala Centro): Strong WiFi, quiet mornings
  • Tony's Coffee (Las Lomas): Good speeds, comfortable seating
  • Al Kafé (Chapala Centro): Reliable connection, accepts laptop users

Most cafes prefer you order something every 2-3 hours if working for extended periods.

Starlink as premium backup — if you're doing critical remote work, some professionals install Starlink as a secondary connection. Monthly cost is high ($1,100 MXN) but provides true redundancy when terrestrial internet fails.

Coworking spaces offer day passes when your home internet is down. INSPIRE CO-LAB typically has availability for drop-ins, and The Lake Chapala Society welcomes day visitors for a small fee.

Power backup is equally important — invest in a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for your router and laptop. Power fluctuations and brief outages are common, especially during storm season (June-October).
