Medical Emergency Resources for Expats in Puerto Vallarta
Complete guide to hospitals, emergency numbers, English-speaking doctors, and medical services in Puerto Vallarta for expats and residents.
Before an Emergency
Mexico's emergency system works differently than what you might expect. Calling 911 connects you to a centralized dispatch, but response times in Puerto Vallarta vary significantly by location — from 10 minutes in Centro and Marina Vallarta to 30+ minutes in outlying areas like Boca de Tomatlán or Mismaloya. The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) typically responds faster than municipal ambulances.
For serious emergencies (heart attack, stroke, major trauma), driving to the hospital yourself or arranging private transport is often faster than waiting for an ambulance, especially during peak traffic hours (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM). Mexican ERs require payment upfront or insurance authorization before treatment, so have your insurance card, credit card, or cash ready.
Keep emergency contacts in both English and Spanish on your phone. Download Google Translate's Spanish offline pack before you need it.

Hospitals & Clinics
Local Puerto Vallarta Facilities
Hospital San Javier Marina is the most expat-friendly option, located in Marina Vallarta with 24/7 emergency services, English-speaking staff, and modern equipment. They handle most emergencies but refer complex cases to Guadalajara.
Hospital CMQ Premier on Basilio Badillo offers 24/7 emergency care with English translation services. Popular with the Zona Romántica expat community but has limited surgical capabilities.
IMSS Clínica 171 provides basic emergency care at lower cost but operates in Spanish only and has longer wait times. Located on Avenida Francisco Villa.
Major City Hospitals for Serious Emergencies
For heart attacks, strokes, major surgery, or ICU care, Guadalajara (4.5-5 hours drive) is your best option:
Hospital Civil Fray Antonio Alcalde - Public hospital with full trauma center and cardiac surgery. Free for emergencies regardless of immigration status.
Hospital Country 2000 - Private facility with excellent cardiac and neurology departments. About 30,000-50,000 MXN daily for ICU.
Hospital Real San José - High-end private hospital with English-speaking staff and international insurance acceptance.
Mexico City (8-9 hours drive) has world-class facilities but Guadalajara is more practical for most emergencies from Puerto Vallarta.
English-Speaking Doctors
The Puerto Vallarta Expat Community Facebook group maintains current doctor referral lists — these change frequently as doctors move or retire. The American Legion Post 14 and International Friendship Club (IFC) also keep updated referral lists.
Doctor Puerto Vallarta on Lázaro Cárdenas offers house calls and speaks fluent English. Doctor At Home PV provides 24/7 home visit services throughout the bay area.
Many local doctors studied in the US and speak English well, but verify language capability when making appointments. The Medical Tourism office at Hospital San Javier can recommend English-speaking specialists.
Medical Translation
The IFC Amigos Program provides volunteer hospital translators — call (322) 222-5466 to request assistance, though availability isn't guaranteed in emergencies.
Professional medical interpreters charge 800-1,500 MXN for hospital accompaniment. Contact the Tourist Police for referrals to certified translators.
For emergency situations, download Google Translate's Spanish offline pack. Learn key phrases: "Soy alérgico a..." (I'm allergic to...), "Tengo dolor aquí" (I have pain here), "Necesito un médico" (I need a doctor).
Write your allergies, medications, and blood type on a card in Spanish to carry in your wallet.
In-Home Care
Post-hospital nursing care is widely available in Puerto Vallarta. Local pharmacies (Farmacia Guadalajara, Benavides) maintain lists of certified nurses for home visits.
Typical costs: Basic wound care visits run 400-600 MXN, medication administration 300-500 MXN, and overnight care 1,200-1,800 MXN per night. Physical therapy home visits cost 600-900 MXN per session.
Many nurses have experience with expat patients and speak basic English. Ask your discharge hospital for referrals — they often have preferred providers.
Air Evacuation
SkyMed and MedjetAssist are popular medical evacuation memberships among Puerto Vallarta expats. Annual memberships run $400-600 USD and cover evacuation to your home country.
The Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport can accommodate medical evacuation flights. Flight time to US border cities is 2-3 hours, to major US medical centers 4-6 hours.
Most travel insurance policies have evacuation coverage limits of $100,000-500,000 USD — verify your coverage as actual evacuation costs can exceed $200,000 USD. Mexican hospitals may require evacuation payment guarantees before releasing critical patients.
Consider evacuation insurance if you have serious pre-existing conditions or are over 70 years old.
