Where to Stay in Ajijic and Lake Chapala

The best area for a first visit, a week or a season, and what each village is like

By StayMXOctober 29, 2026

For a first visit, stay in Ajijic centro: it's walkable, most restaurants and the malecón are a few minutes on foot, and English is common. Choose Chapala if you'd rather be in a larger, more local working town.

Where to stay for a short visit

AreaBest for
AjijicFirst visits. Walkable centre, most restaurants, the malecón and the Wednesday market.
ChapalaA larger, more local town with everyday services.

If you want to walk to markets and activities, stay within a few blocks of Ajijic's plaza or malecón. The tianguis (street market) is on Wednesdays along the Ajijic malecón.

Staying longer: the villages

The lakeside villages each have their own character, and the choice changes the cost a lot:

Getting there and around

  • Guadalajara airport is about 45 minutes by car. A private transfer is the easiest arrival; StayMX's verified drivers can quote you before you land.
  • A frequent bus runs the length of the lakeside road, connecting the villages.

Good to know

  • Cards: accepted more widely than on the coast (Superlake and Walmart take them), but small shops and the tianguis are cash.
  • Internet: Telmex and Totalplay are good in the Ajijic and Chapala centres; confirm at the specific house if you'll work remotely.
  • Weather: spring-like most of the year; the rainy season runs June to October, mostly in the afternoons.
  • Newcomers: the Lake Chapala Society's Monday coffee hour is the best first stop.
